Aspects of Additional Applied Science

What Applied Science is like

Additional Applied Science is taken alongside Science. It is a course for any student with an interest in science, including those who wish to prepare for post-16 vocational study. It focuses on authentic work-related contexts where an understanding of science underlies the standard procedures and techniques used by practitioners.

Activities
Activities are geared to helping students to improve their practical competence - see Work-related portfolio. Activity sheets for the students are accompanied by guidance notes for technicians and teachers.

Textbooks
The Applied Science textbooks provide students with explanations and case studies of real applications of science. There is information about people and organisations working in a range of vocational areas. There are instructions about standard procedures and techniques, and guidance on coursework.

ICT
ICT resources for Applied Science include video clips featuring people using science in their work. See Applied Science videos.

Schemes of Work
Each module has a scheme of work summarising suggestions for 35 hours of classroom-based learning:
• student activities and ICT resources,
• the specification covered,
• suggested timings.

Assessment
Assessment must encourage thoughtful teaching and learning. In order to ensure that teaching is not distorted by the examination, an assessment scheme has been devised which matches and enhances the course. See Assessment.

Coursework
In Applied Science, 50% of total marks come from skills assessed through a work-related portfolio. For more information see Assessment.

Revision materials
Workbooks provide students with interactive questions to help their learning.
