Video sequences for Applied Science
• “I'm an enthusiastic practitioner and these are problems I solve at work.”
• “These are the skills I need and techniques I use.”
• “This is the story of how I got to be where I am now.”
We’re making a series of video sequences showing a range of skills and techniques used by practitioners, in contexts where results matter. They can also be used in classrooms to make links between methods available to students and the ‘real thing’.
For example, we might show the preparation of a paper or thin layer chromatogram. After students complete a practical task in the lab, they can return to the video to see the related techniques of gas chromatography and high-pressure liquid chromatography, both too sophisticated for schools.
The Twenty First Century Science project team has just started a new partnership, this time with the Science Enhancement Programme. Working with the science education company 4Science and the Educational Broadcasting Services Trust, we will produce teaching and learning materials to support the teaching of applied science at GCSE level. At the heart of these will be video sequences for six to ten applied science topics.
The Nuffield Curriculum Centre will produce a package of resources for the Additional Science (Applied) course in the Twenty First Century Science suite. 4Science will produce a second package, targeted at Units 1 and 3 of Double Award Applied Science.
