Science Explanations
No one can be said to be 'scientifically literate' unless they undersand some science. But what matters is to have a broad understanding of the main scientific explanations that give us a framework for making sense of the world around us.
We want people to understand these major science explanations and be able to apply them. We do not want them to get bogged down in intricate detail. We avoid introducing so much complexity that many simply switch off.
These are the titles for the Science Explanations we have picked because we think they have something important to tell us all about ourselves, our environment and our place in the Universe:
- Chemicals;
- Chemical change;
- Materials and their properties;
- The interdependence of living things;
- The chemical cycles of life;
- Cells as the basic units of living things;
- Maintenance of life;
- The gene theory of inheritance;
- The theory of evolution by natural selection;
- The germ theory of disease;
