GCSE Additional Science
Concepts-led science

Additional Science is taken with the GCSE Science course. It prepares students for progression to study AS and A-levels in the sciences. It gives emphasis and space to fundamental ideas in the sciences, and provides a stimulating bridge to advanced study.
Additional Science leads to one GCSE grade. Because the courses are separate, this may differ from the Science grade.
See the module maps which you can download at the bottom of this page.
Biology
The biology in the Additional Science course for future scientists takes homeostasis as the theme of the first module, looking at the control of body temperature and of the body’s water balance. Next comes a study of growth and development, building on the treatment of genetics in the Core course. The final module is about the brain and mind, covering topics including learning, memory, and the effects of drugs on the nervous system.
Chemistry
The chemistry in the Additional Science course introduces a view of the world that seeks to explain patterns in the behaviour of chemicals in terms of atomic structure. Ideas about structure and bonding are introduced in the context of changes in the natural environment. The third module illustrates the practical importance of chemistry in synthesis.
Physics
The physics in the Additional Science course covers how and why things move (taking an approach focussing on momentum), electricity and its effects, and the wave model of radiation. The physics strand gives particular emphasis to the way scientists use models.
Content
There are nine modules in Additional Science. Students study all of them.
